Does anyone actually read these shownotes ? I suspect that the majority get the podcast from the feed, listen to the show and then wait until next week for the next one. Hands up if you faithfully peruse them – or better still, leave me a comment saying “Aye !”. Writing them for the various forums, this site, iTunes, MySpace etc is eating up a large chunk of my time and I’m not sure if the detailed notes are adding any value; it may be time better spent on recording and finding new music. Howard Jones – Building Our Own Future
Ladies of a certain age will probably swoon at the thought of their teen heartthrob, Howard. A solo synth-pop pioneer, he formed part of the musical background to many a formative experience of many of our youthful years. He’s still going strong, still recording and touring – and on the strength of this track, he can still compose a damn fine and really catchy tune.

Swedish Polar Bears – Norman Blake / Worship This
On my first listen to these Swedes on MySpace, I was convinced that Alastair “Dropkick” Taylor had formed another offshoot band and he was pretending to be Scandinavian. Nope ! This great band share similar influences (Teenage Fanclub in particular) to Dropkick and you’ll hear it in their sound. They even mention it in their lyrics, so listen closely !!

Phideaux – Microdeath Softstar
What can I say about this ? I’m running out of superlatives before I even start. Doomsday Afternoon is an album of true grandeur; it’s a pinnacle of prog – a blistering beacon of brilliance. My first though as the final notes of the album died away was “Wow !!” as I scrabbled to hit the button to replay it. This track is the ‘final freakout’ finale of the CD, where all of the themes are tossed in the air and chopped up into one stunning track. The CD will be available for sale on CDBaby etc very soon – rush out and buy it and start spreading the word. Tell them Three From Leith sent you..

Information – I believe in the past I’ve said Slow Dance Society rather than Slow Dancing Society. Drue says this is “no biggy” but I apologise nonetheless.
Drue tells me that two albums are in the pipeline. The albums are concept albums about Winter and Summer respectively. The first one, out in Autumn, will be a very cold sombre sounding album while the second, to follow in the Summer, will be something a little warmer in tone.

After a number of weeks playing more of a rock / alt selection than anything else, I decided that it was time to slow it down a bit and get a little more laid back. It’s an opportune time too, as I’ve had a fair amount of just that type of music coming in to help me create the right vibe. The opening track from singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist and producer Robin Tymm’s new album, Whole Lies & Half-Truths. Robin exemplifies the true spirit of the independent artist by doing it all himself and trusting that listeners and fans will support him by buying enough to at least recoup his costs. I just read the sad news that Mark Hunter is ending the tartanpodcast and his Mellow Monday Show. Though it’s been obvious for a while that Mark’s heart wasn’t really in it any more and that he was no longer getting any creative fulfillment from his music podcasting, it still comes as a great shock.

The tartanpodcast was the very first podcast I ever subscribed to, and indeed was the reason I started podcasting myself. Mark provided invaluable help to me when I got started, and has always been there as a friend.

Here’s wishing him well and every success in his ongoing work as a Producer for tartanmedia productions and Talking Voices.  All the best Mark !
