Show 93 – Breaking Out All Over

June 5th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

There seems to be a boom at this time of year with new albums being released in both the podsafe and mainstream arenas which are making demands on my wallet. It must be the ‘summer blockbuster’ effect spreading into other creative areas ! Not that I’m complaining – the more new music the better, especially in podsafe and independent circles. It’s surely a sign that there’s a growing market out there for the indies, helped – hopefully – by the music podcasters providing them with access to many new ears.

A Singer Must Die – Croydon Road
A second outing from this finest of scotophile French duos, with a rather tasty track from their debut album, “Today It’s A Wonderful Day”, which you’ll find to buy by clicking the link below. I pre-ordered it on the strength of ‘The Crash’, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Santa Dog – West Coast Boy Racers
From their Kittyhawk album, now released on Quince Records in Japan, comes another track to tickle the tastebuds. Keep our eye on their website for upcoming UK/US distribution details, and be sure to buy it – it’s a sparkly little cracker !

Ag Silver – Dangerously / All That To Say
From their ‘Wake Up And Smell The Reality’ album, which you’ll find on their website (link above), some great anthemic rock from this Michigan band. Winners of Michigan’s largest battle of the bands in 2003, they’ve spent the following years re-inventing their sound to bring something fresh to the music industry – and this is the result !

Podcast User Magazine – Issue 17 out now

June 2nd, 2007

The new edition of Podcast User Magazine, the free PDF-format monthly mag for the podcast listener and producer alike, has once again hit the virtual newsagents’ shelves. This month it features the podcasts that have grown around the television hit series ‘LOST’. Read about the many ways that fans have gathered to talk about this show, and read reviews of their ‘casts as well. In addition, it gives you a glimpse into the life of Joseph Dougherty, who wrote for the hit series ‘thirtysomething’ and continues to work in television when he’s not podcasting Handwritten Theatre. Add to these stories a new column by comedy stars Sowerby & Luff, more wisdom from our regular reviewers, an ‘Audio 101’ course on mixers, an explanation of RSS, advice on increasing your presence through Google, new rounds of Review Roulette and Global Voices (in Holland and Belgium for video), a review of the Edirol R-09 AND a brand-new, expanded section on music, and you’ve got a whole lot of reading to do. Your copy will – as usual – arrive in the TFL feed, or you can download it by clicking on the image below.

Another busy week and very little podcasting time, so the lip is reasonably-well zipped and the chit-chat is supplied at a reduced level once again. Fear not, though – the music is still smokin’ hot and ready to get you singing along.

Show 91 – ‘Box of Delights’

May 22nd, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

I’m very excited – this week I’m playing the new single from my good friends and TFL favourites Santa Dog, from their soon-to-be-released debut album, ‘Kittyhawk’. Not only that, but there’s an astoundingly HUGE track from Globus which features a massive choir and orchestra as well as a member of Feeder. All of this is topped off with a cracking double-bill from Movie55, who’re only the second South African artists featured on the show. It simply illustrates the breathtaking quality of unsigned and independent music and musicianship that’s out there – who needs the manufactured dross that makes up the majority of the mainstream these days ?

Santa Dog – Big Bang
Available to buy now as a download (see the various links on their website for details) and as a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single, this is the first release from their forthcoming debut album, ‘Kittyhawk’. Distinctively ‘Dog’, it’s a sparkling stunner !
Santa Dog’s MySpace
Email Santa Dog

Globus – Orchard of Mines
An epic production, with a big, big sound from members of Vanton (played on TFL #10), Feeder and the assembled cast of orchestral players and a huge choir. It has ‘hit’ stamped all over it, and you’re hearing it first on podcasts. Expect it to hit the charts when it hits mainstream radio.
Globus’s MySpace
Email Globus

Movie55 – Anyone In There / Paint A Picture
A blindingly good pair of songs from only the second South African artists on TFL after Karma. The minute I found them I knew I had a closing duo – catchy, top-drawer rock which leaves you begging for more. And there WILL be more at a future date – so stay tuned !

Show 90 – Catching up on Grandad

May 15th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

90 shows in (though in reality there have been a few more, as early ‘specials’ went un-numbered), and still feeling young and fresh as a daisy. In two more shows I’ll be matching Grandad for age – and he’s still as young at heart as ever, despite arthritic knees and very little eyesight ! Like him, the show still skelps along like a whippet (translation: ‘goes quickly’) and keeps up with the times. So enjoy another vintage show and do keep the feedback coming.

Heartbreak Club – She Talked To Me
Rattling along with a lovely Rush-cum-punk-cum-80s vibe, these Canadians hit all the right buttons as a show-opener. Grab their CD and other merchandise here !

Rieser – Like A Whisper
Shamefully neglected before, it’s time to put Rieser in their place on TFL as one of Edinburgh’s finest up-and-coming bands. Get the ‘Well Dressed Thief’ CD from the link on their homepage or on their MySpace page.

Swedish For Beginners – Special Offer For A Limited Time Only / This City Is Not For Me
With a unique sound and a style that only the Swedes seem to produce with aplomb, enjoy the sparkling freshness of this week’s twin-trackers. Their CD-single ‘Magical Machines’ is for sale here.
Breaking News !the band has attracted the attention of one of Sweden’s major producers, Ollie Olsson (who’s worked with artists such as Eagle Eye Cherry, Sugarplum Fairy, I’m From Barcelona, Christian Walz etc – check his CV at mixinc.se), who will produce their first EP. They’ve had rehearsal sessions with him this past weekend, and start recording on Saturday. Both of the songs played on TFL will be re-recorded with the full band (the present versions feature Johan alone). The EP will be released after the summer, and will be followed by a tour (maybe including Britain, if they see that there’s a sufficient fanbase). Get buying, folks !

Show 89 – On Being Led Astray

May 8th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

Blame Parky. I was invited out on Tuesday at the last minute to join Kent-based podcaster and ex-PUM editor Paul Parkinson for a few drinks, since he was up in Edinburgh on business. I was only going out for a few, mind – I had a 5.40am rise and a 10 mile cycle the next morning. Somehow it stretched to something like 4 pints of Thrappledouser and two bottles of Innes & Gunn (I feel iffy after 2 pints usually), and although it was a great evening where we were joined by Ewan “TPN” Spence, I was silently cursing him as a hit the cyclepath on Wednesday, feeling disticntly hung over. I set out thinking this was a short show, but after reviewing it at the editing stage, it’s almost 30 minutes anyway. The alcohol was still pickling my brain days later, obviously.

Show 88 – Championship Titles

May 1st, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

As a young man’s (cough !) thoughts turn to summer, it’s good to start finding more new bands and new music from existing bands to accompany the listener through hot, sunny days and warm, humid nights. Funnily enough, the same kinds of thoughts must start going through the artists’ minds, as I’ve noticed a distinct upturn in the number of submissions hitting the Three From Leith inbox. They’re all stunningly good, too – so make sure your aural pleasure receptors have had a good spring clean as there’s podcasting gold in them thar submissions and it’s heading your way in the weeks and months ahead !

Show 87 – A Cheeky Little Number

April 24th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

It sometimes gets a little tough trying to remember when recording that it’s not usually going to be heard until 4 days in the future. Current events will be history by the time you listen, as indeed will future events that occur between recording and releasing. I tend to lose track very easily (but then it’s never hard to lose me !) and the choice of tense in my bletherings may start to get confused. Ach well – never mind. So long as the great music keeps on rolling. Listen to a double-helping here, and see if you can count how many times I manage to mention Podcast User Magazine in one show….

Don Lennon – My Resume / Why We Masturbate

Show 86 – Sunshine On Leith

April 17th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

The UK is experiencing some unseasonably warm weather at the moment, so there really is – in the words of the Proclaimers – ‘Sunshine On Leith’ this week. I even witnessed Andy Tucker of the Dead Beat Club wearing sandals at a gig in a bar round the corner on Wednesday night, and it’s still only April !! I had to keep reminding myself of this fact as I sat in my parents’ back garden on Saturday, in the sun, sipping a cold beer and eating Jasna’s ‘picnic’ food (crisps, nuts & Bombay Mix) as the bees buzzed around the flowers which were in full bloom. You might like to slip outside if it’s warm where you are, sit back in the sun and turn the volume up for a cracking summer rock soundtrack consisting of:

Five Star Iris – Let It All Out
A comment I frequently make when Jasna breaks wind (which is often !), and this track really ‘lets rip’ to kick the podcast off in great style. Oh dear. What awful puns for such fantastic music. Lighten your wallet by making a trip to the band’s shop and ordering your copy of their self-titled album on their shop page.

Starcode – Cold & Freezing / More Time
Brought to my attention by a label in Burbank, CA, whose boss and I got into discussions on Leith history !
