Show 124.5 – Short and Sweet

March 4th, 2008

Oh dear – family commitments ate into TFL time again this week, but rather than leave you for another week with no show, I’ve put together a very quick podcast with one (brilliant) song. I will definitely have a full show next week – the family situation is now back to normal !

No show this week

February 26th, 2008

I knew that my usual recording Friday was out last week because Jasna was coming for an extra night, so I planned to record on Thursday. And then on Thursday afternoon I got a phone call out of the blue from my best pal who was up from England for a few days, asking if we could go out that night. Result – my recording window for the week had been closed. As ever, feel free to raid the extensive show archive for your weekly fix of great independent music until normal service is resumed next week.

Wheels around the world, air out of my wheel, air out of one’s backside, Viz and more insane ramblings this week, along with some splendidly – nay astonishingly – excellent music. Don’t ever say I’m not good to you !

Show 123 – Foggy-Bummer’s Patellas

February 12th, 2008

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

This hasn’t happened for a while – an entirely Scottish show ! Whilst I do get submissions from Scottish bands pretty regularly, I never get sets that would fit together nicely into a coherent show. But at last, things came together with bands I heard from recently and bands I’d almost forgotten to play. I almost felt possessed by Mark Hunter… (and I got to avoid another syrupy Valentine show !)

Show 122 – Against The Wind

February 5th, 2008

Wow – what a week it’s been, weather-wise. We’ve had a wee bit of everything, proving the old adage of “if you don’t like the weather in Scotland, just wait five minutes and something different will come along shortly”. It’s certainly made for exciting and tough (but fun) cycling. So let’s segue into some exciting and fun music (arghh – the links get even more awful !)

Show 121 – Dandruff Shakeout

January 29th, 2008

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

An unashamedly rocky show this week – for no other reason other than the fact that I felt like it after stuffing my face with haggis. I show my poetic side with a recital of a famous Burns poem, and we hear that I’m even like in Canberra. So shocked was I that I forgot to even say thanks to the contributor, Dave Pearson from Artsound 92.7FM during the recording. Thanks, Dave !

Show 120 – Haggis and Neeps

January 22nd, 2008

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

Well, this coming Friday is (as well as being payday / bonus day) Burns’ Night. So, in a vain and strained attempt to inject some relevance I’ve lined up the Scots and the Swedes. Sadly, there’s no such race as the tatties or potatoes, so we’re left with the Haggis and the Neeps. (For those who don’t know, we have swedes (aka turnips or ‘neeps’) as the traditional accompaniment to haggis, along with tatties). There’s also some nonsense talking, but that wasn’t Scots – no matter how much it may sound like it to non-natives ! And despite what I may say in the intro, this IS show 120, not 119 again… oops

Show 119 – ‘Leading Ladies’

January 15th, 2008

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

The ladies. Where would we gents be without them ? (sitting recording podcasts on a Friday night instead of whispering sweet nothings in a lady’s ear, that’s where ! – Ed.) And to celebrate the fact, I’ve given over this week’s show to the leading ladies. Stunningly talented, whether on their own or fronting a band where they’re keeping the lads in check and out of the way, this is how Davina, Penny and Nikki sound. Pay attention !

Show 118 – New Beginnings

January 8th, 2008

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

Well, that’s another year gone that we’ll never see again. Shame, as it did produce some stunning new podsafe music that we all enjoyed. Never mind though, you should all have bought the albums by the artists you loved and be proud owners of a lovely, shiny CD collection to remind you of what you heard ! And now the whole process begins all over again, as 2008 brings fresh tracks, fresh artists, old favourites and the same old blethering from me…. so let’s get started with a bag of tunes which all feature the relevant word ‘new’ for the first TFL of the year.

The Christmas Show 2007

December 21st, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

And so we come to yet another Christmas here on Three From Leith, and Santa’s sack is bulging with festive musical goodies for everyone. There are happy songs, sad songs, songs about scampi and the customary rude Christmas song (I can’t let Christmas go by without a little seasonal smut now, can I ?). Settle down with your mince pies and mulled wine and enjoy:

Skid Row – Jingle Bells

Dropkick – Scampi For Christmas

Malcolm Middleton – We’re All Going To Die

Epic Hero – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Dead Beat Club – Shopping Mall Santa

Rusty Bladen – Feels Like Christmas

Hot Club De Paris – Will You Still Be In Love With Me Next Year ?

Winzenried – Here Comes Santa Claus

Volume Brothers – Disappointingly Sober

Pocket Gods – W*nking For Christmas

The soundbed was ‘Bluegrass Jingle Bells’ by Carl Vasta
