Show 100 is fast approaching – what am I to do ? A normal show ? A celebration ? Do let me have your thoughts or submit an audio comment or a text one. In the meantime, feast your ears on another fine selection of music, including an awesome 14 minute track from Phideaux’s new album.

King Bear – This Is That
With a vocal track supplied from movie clips, this is a chilling and ever so slightly haunting instrumental from Edinburgh’s King Bear – featuring an unintentional greyhound poisoner and ex-workmate of mine !

Phideaux – Microdeath Softstar
What can I say about this ? I’m running out of superlatives before I even start. Doomsday Afternoon is an album of true grandeur; it’s a pinnacle of prog – a blistering beacon of brilliance. My first though as the final notes of the album died away was “Wow !!” as I scrabbled to hit the button to replay it. This track is the ‘final freakout’ finale of the CD, where all of the themes are tossed in the air and chopped up into one stunning track. The CD will be available for sale on CDBaby etc very soon – rush out and buy it and start spreading the word. Tell them Three From Leith sent you..

Yes, it’s time for another edition of Three Men In A Pod, where Gabor, Neil and I present a selection of music typical of each of our shows. After listening, please subscribe to the other shows if you enjoy what they’re doing – or recommend them to your friends / family / pets if you think they’d enjoy them instead !

Three From Leith

Montoya
– Man Of The World
Swedish For Beginners – Magical Machines
A Singer Must Die – The Fallow Land
Seagull Strange – Love’s Sick Disease

Electrical Language Podcast

Mobius Band – The Loving sounds Of Static
My Favorite – Burning Hearts
A Band Called Quinn – The Next Time

Well Made Music

Aoyoma – Caravane
Location – Paris, France
Band members – Fabrice Mougin
Myspacehttp://www.myspace.com/fabricemougin
Information – Fabrice Mougin composes for television. The Aoyoma project was born with these ideas in mind: to tell stories, draw paintings, create an atmosphere and put characters on a stage. With Aoyoma, unlike his work for television, the film is imaginary. The song Caravane is about the desert and its people.

Audiomas – Traveller
Location – Los Angeles, USA
Band members – Mark Schwartzman, mastering by Brian Stroner
Myspacehttp://www.myspace.com/audiomas
Information – In addition to creating his own music, Audiomas has been working as an audio engineer in film and television. In a recent email mark said “Thank you very much for choosing Traveller to be on your show. It is much appreciated. Feel free to say what you would like about me and my music. I have nothing to add, other than I enjoy the creative process and would love to think others enjoy the sounds I have created.”

Slow Dancing Society – A Song To Help You Remember To Forget
Location – Spokane, Washington, USA
Band members – Drue Sullivan & Friends
Myspacehttp://www.myspace.com/slowdancingsociety
Information – I believe in the past I’ve said Slow Dance Society rather than Slow Dancing Society. Drue says this is “no biggy” but I apologise nonetheless.
Drue tells me that two albums are in the pipeline. The albums are concept albums about Winter and Summer respectively. The first one, out in Autumn, will be a very cold sombre sounding album while the second, to follow in the Summer, will be something a little warmer in tone.
Thanks to Cam at Hidden Shoal for permission to play Slow Dancing Society on the podcast. Cam has asked me to point you in the direction of Hidden Shoal because it’s the labels 1st birthday (happy birthday from WWM) and they are giving away a new sampler album (with a Slow Dancing Society track on it) as well as other prizes.

(With many thanks to all of those who graciously gave up their time and talents to produce the intros and bumpers – The Three Men)

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

The arrival in the post of a seriously fine album on my flexiday off work set me off on a mission to play some piano-led tracks and this is the result. Take the stool and tickle the ivories along with this week’s grand selection !

Steve Adey – Death To All Things Real / Mississippi
A stunningly atmospheric and brilliantly produced pair of songs from Steve which you’ll find on his “All Things Real” album. I just love the squeak of the piano stool in the first track – it had me pulling off my headphones that morning wondering what the cat was doing out in the hall, only to realise the noise was only on the track..

Show 94 – ‘Multiple Endings’

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

After a number of weeks playing more of a rock / alt selection than anything else, I decided that it was time to slow it down a bit and get a little more laid back. It’s an opportune time too, as I’ve had a fair amount of just that type of music coming in to help me create the right vibe. So, slip off your shoes, snuggle up in your favourite armchair and enjoy this week’s fine selection.

Robin Tymm – Breathe
The opening track from singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist and producer Robin Tymm’s new album, Whole Lies & Half-Truths. Robin exemplifies the true spirit of the independent artist by doing it all himself and trusting that listeners and fans will support him by buying enough to at least recoup his costs. It’s that pioneering, can-do spirit that really warms my heart. It helps too that the CD is a little slice of brilliance. Buy it. Now !!

Thomas Leer – Blood Of A Poet
Jazzy, swinging and loose – with some classic poetry thrown in ! A whisky-soaked and smoke-wreathed gem from a genuine pioneer of electronica. A read of Thomas’s bio is a humbling experience when you realise just how wide and deep his influence has been.(with thanks to ireallylovemusic.co.uk).
Thomas Leer’s MySpace

AnnieJ – Palindrome Of Regret
An atmospheric, introverted and breathlessly haunting track from the talented AnnieJ. Not only does she work solo, but she also works on projects with her sister, with a band and with another artist, Tim Alexander. Obviously a very busy girl ! Full details and links can be found on her MySpace

End of an era

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

I just read the sad news that Mark Hunter is ending the tartanpodcast and his Mellow Monday Show. Though it’s been obvious for a while that Mark’s heart wasn’t really in it any more and that he was no longer getting any creative fulfillment from his music podcasting, it still comes as a great shock.

The tartanpodcast was the very first podcast I ever subscribed to, and indeed was the reason I started podcasting myself. Mark provided invaluable help to me when I got started, and has always been there as a friend.

Here’s wishing him well and every success in his ongoing work as a Producer for tartanmedia productions and Talking Voices.  All the best Mark !

Show 93 – Breaking Out All Over

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Listen here or use the player on the right, though I’d love you to subscribe !

There seems to be a boom at this time of year with new albums being released in both the podsafe and mainstream arenas which are making demands on my wallet. It must be the ‘summer blockbuster’ effect spreading into other creative areas ! Not that I’m complaining – the more new music the better, especially in podsafe and independent circles. It’s surely a sign that there’s a growing market out there for the indies, helped – hopefully – by the music podcasters providing them with access to many new ears.

A Singer Must Die – Croydon Road
A second outing from this finest of scotophile French duos, with a rather tasty track from their debut album, “Today It’s A Wonderful Day”, which you’ll find to buy by clicking the link below. I pre-ordered it on the strength of ‘The Crash’, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Santa Dog – West Coast Boy Racers
From their Kittyhawk album, now released on Quince Records in Japan, comes another track to tickle the tastebuds. Keep our eye on their website for upcoming UK/US distribution details, and be sure to buy it – it’s a sparkly little cracker !

Ag Silver – Dangerously / All That To Say
From their ‘Wake Up And Smell The Reality’ album, which you’ll find on their website (link above), some great anthemic rock from this Michigan band. Winners of Michigan’s largest battle of the bands in 2003, they’ve spent the following years re-inventing their sound to bring something fresh to the music industry – and this is the result !

Podcast User Magazine – Issue 17 out now

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

The new edition of Podcast User Magazine, the free PDF-format monthly mag for the podcast listener and producer alike, has once again hit the virtual newsagents’ shelves. This month it features the podcasts that have grown around the television hit series ‘LOST’. Read about the many ways that fans have gathered to talk about this show, and read reviews of their ‘casts as well. In addition, it gives you a glimpse into the life of Joseph Dougherty, who wrote for the hit series ‘thirtysomething’ and continues to work in television when he’s not podcasting Handwritten Theatre. Add to these stories a new column by comedy stars Sowerby & Luff, more wisdom from our regular reviewers, an ‘Audio 101’ course on mixers, an explanation of RSS, advice on increasing your presence through Google, new rounds of Review Roulette and Global Voices (in Holland and Belgium for video), a review of the Edirol R-09 AND a brand-new, expanded section on music, and you’ve got a whole lot of reading to do. Your copy will – as usual – arrive in the TFL feed, or you can download it by clicking on the image below.
